Roscoflamex PA Paint Additive
Roscoflamex PA is a clear, un-pigmented additive that turns most water-based paints into a flame-retardant coating. Mix one full 8 oz jar into a single US gallon (3.79 L) of latex or vinyl-acrylic paint to form a barrier that slows flame spread along the painted surface—without changing color or finish.
(No external sources required; details reflect manufacturer specifications.)
Key Features & Benefits
- Surface barrier: Creates a flame-retardant paint film—does not change the inherent flammability of the substrate.
- Clear, un-pigmented: Preserves your paint’s color, sheen, and working properties.
- Easy dosage: One 8 oz jar per 1 gallon of compatible water-based paint.
- Wide compatibility: Most latex/vinyl acrylic paints, primers, scenic paints, and acrylic glazes (see list below).
- Compliance: Tested to ASTM E-84 Class A; approved by the California Fire Marshal.
Compatibility & Mix Ratios
Standard mix: Add one 8 oz jar Roscoflamex PA to one US gallon (3.79 L) of paint. Mix thoroughly.
Rosco Supersaturated: Add one 8 oz jar to one quart of undiluted Supersaturated, then dilute that mixture at least 1:1 with water before use. Mix thoroughly.
PA compares to the original P50. Do not intermix old and new Flamex products.
Compatible uses include:
- Latex house paints (interior/exterior as paint allows)
- Tinted latex paints
- Latex primers
- Rosco Scenic paints
- Clear flat or gloss acrylic glazes
- Vinyl & acrylic water-based mural paints
Always test with your specific paint for compatibility and finish.
Coverage & Film Thickness
Coverage: 8 oz PA mixed into 1 gallon of paint treats ~300 sq ft (28 m²), per the paint manufacturer’s guidelines.
Critical requirement: The dry paint film must be ≥ 4 mil (0.004") thick. Thin or incomplete films will not provide an effective barrier.
Application
- Apply by brush, roller, or sprayer per the paint manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ensure a continuous, uniform film and meet the 4 mil dry-film minimum.
- Where practical, treat the substrate itself using an appropriate Roscoflamex product; PA is not a substitute for substrate treatment.
Certifications & Testing
- ASTM E-84 Class A (surface flame spread rating).
- Approved by the California Fire Marshal.
Storage & Handling
- Store Flamex products in non-metallic containers.
- If metal sprayers are used, clean thoroughly after use, including nozzles and accessories.
- Avoid metal buckets/paint cans where possible.
