Durable two-coat deck system Deep-penetrating water-borne alkyd Flat to low-lustre finish Excellent UV and weather protection Breathable and water repellent Soap and water cleanup
Summary
Sansin DEC is a durable, penetrating two-coat finish engineered for high-wear horizontal wood surfaces like decks, docks, and balconies. DEC penetrates deeply to protect wood from within, helps stabilize wood movement, and delivers excellent UV and weather resistance in a rugged flat to low-lustre finish.
Want a fuller look? Apply DEC as the first coat and follow with DEC Topcoat for a fuller, medium-lustre finish.

For a fuller, medium-lustre finish, use DEC as coat one and DEC Topcoat as coat two (and optional coat three).
Surface Preparation
- Inspect wood for defects and complete any repairs before coating.
- Clean the entire surface using a cleaner and/or wash with a minimum 3000 PSI pressure washer using clean water.
- Sand thoroughly using 60 to 80 grit and a variable speed orbital sander.
- Follow by power washing, vacuuming, or compressed air for proper cleaning.
- Surface must be clean and free of dust, dirt, grease, wax, or existing coatings.
Application Instructions
- Stir well before and during use.
- Test on an inconspicuous area to confirm colour and penetration.
- Apply in proper conditions: ideal temperature around 21 C (70 F) and relative humidity around 50%.
- Do not apply if rain or near freezing temperatures are expected.
- Do not apply on wood that is warm to the touch or in direct sunlight.
- Flood the surface to the point of saturation and apply evenly.
- Brush out all puddles and runs. Continually check the surface and wipe up excess.
- If a low-lustre, non film-forming finish is desired, apply a second coat of DEC after proper dry time.
- If a fuller finish is desired, apply an appropriately tinted coat of DEC Topcoat as the second coat. A third coat of DEC Topcoat may be applied for improved finish and durability.
Maintenance
Horizontal surfaces typically require maintenance every 1 to 4 years, depending on exposure, prep, and application quality. Maintain when you see fading or erosion.
- Periodically clean with a power washer or Sansin Multi-Wash to remove dirt and residue.
- If wear is evident, lightly clean and re-apply one maintenance coat according to instructions.
Safety & Handling
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Avoid contact with skin or eyes; wash with soap and water.
- Avoid breathing vapor or mist; wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator where required.
- Read label and Safety Data Sheet before use.
FAQs (Quick Answers)
-
Is DEC meant for decks only?
- It is engineered for high-wear horizontal wood surfaces like decks, docks, and balconies. It also works for fences and other exterior wood where a penetrating system is desired.
-
How many coats should I apply?
- DEC is designed as a two-coat system. For a fuller finish, use DEC as coat one and DEC Topcoat as coat two (optional third coat of Topcoat for added durability and finish).
-
What sheen is DEC?
- DEC is flat to low lustre. DEC Topcoat can be used to build a fuller, medium-lustre finish.
-
How long until I can recoat?
- At 20 C (68 F), allow 6 to 8 hours between applications. Dry times increase with high humidity or low temperature.
-
How much does it cover?
- Approx. 200 to 300 sq ft per US gallon, depending on wood species and porosity.
-
How do I maintain it?
- Clean periodically. When wear (fading or erosion) appears, clean and apply a maintenance coat. Horizontal surfaces typically need maintenance every 1 to 4 years depending on exposure.
